Not wishing to worry family back home, the soldiers reported on things like the ever-so-rare occurence of receiving ice cream. What they did not report on were things like the daily routine of peeling rotting skin from their feet. The hours spent in combat boots trudging through the flooded rice paddies left their feet in a deplorable condition.
