This virtual museum was made as a junior level English project at Cuero High School in Cuero, Texas. This museum is "virtual" only. It does not actually exist in San Marcos or anywhere else. While the information presented in this website is factually based, some of it is, by assignment, "creative writing."
Artifact 1 is a slide show. This slide show is found on the Welcome page. Slides included depict two scenes from the Vietnam War, a picture of Tim O'Brien during his time in Vietnam, and picture of him in later years as he is relaxing in the backyard of his Austin, Texas, home. I chose to use these pictures and place them at the beginning of the presentation to set the stage and provide some background to my author.
Artifact 2 is a newspaper article. This is one of the artifacts that is "creative" on my part: Mr. O'Brien has not actually been named Parade Marshal in the Turkeyfest parade. I chose to write this article to highlight the partnership between my hometown of Cuero and Mr. O'Brien's hometown of Worthington. I find it quite interesting and coincidental that one of my favorite authors is from Worthington. It is through this article that I provide basic background information about Mr. O'Brien.
Artifact 3 is a letter. This artifact, also, falls in the creative writing category. I feel sure Tim wrote similar letters to his parents, although this is not one of them. I used some of my family's personal experience to write this letter. Like this fictional Tim, my brother mailed undeveloped rolls of film from time to time. Included on these rolls were a picture of him enthusiastically eating ice cream and some pictures of landscapes that were blurred due to nearby shelling. The information about the conditions of the soldiers' feet also came from my brother, which he did not share with us until many years later.
Artifact 4 is a cartoon. Yes, I know I am no artist. I chose to create this cartoon to illustrate Tim O'Brien's success as a writer. He has won many, many awards for his writing over the years. Although the cartoon indicates a somewhat lackadaisical, ho-hum attitude toward winning awards, it is not my intention to portray him as such. I'm sure he continues to feel very honored with each award he wins.
Artifact 5 is a quote collage. I found a print copy of a lecture Mr. O'Brien gave at Brown University in 1999. As I read through his lecture, I selected things he said about the craft of writing. I turned the chosen quotes into a verbal collage. I feel that these quotes give the reader an insight into Mr. O'Brien's craft.
Artifact 6 is a ten-question Kahoot quiz. It is my hope that after viewing the various artifacts available in my "museum," the visitor will have a better knowledge of Tim O'Brien.
