Dear visitor,
Welcome to the Tim O'Brien virtual museum! It is my hope that when you complete your visit, you will have a greater appreciation for this modern American writer.
I chose to research this author for several reasons. First, I am very interested in knowing more about the Vietnam War, and my reason is a personal one. My older brother served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. At that time, I was just a mere youngster who looked up to her big brother and saw him as a grown-up. Now that I'm an adult, I realize my 19-year-old brother was still just a kid himself. My brother chose not to talk about his experiences in Vietnam, and, as a family, we respected his wishes. Mr. O'Brien has written extensively on this war, and, like my brother, he can be considered a primary source. Reading his writings is as close as I will ever get to understanding just what my brother went through.
Another reason I chose to research Mr. O'Brien is that he currently resides in Texas and is a retired member of the Creative Writing faculty at Texas State University in San Marcos. I am an alumnus of this university, as are both of my daughters.
Finally, I find it quite interesting that he hails originally from Worthington, Minnesota. My home town of Cuero, Texas, has a partnership with Worthington. Both small towns claim to be "The Turkey Capital of the World." To settle this difference, the communities host a "Great Gobbler Gallop" each year to determine who has the right to that title for the year.
With his body of primary source information on the Vietnam war and his ties to both San Marcos and Cuero, I feel like he is someone I would enjoy knowing personally. I hope that you will feel that way about him, as well, at the conclusion of your visit.
Enjoy your stay!
